For those non-Americans, un-Americans or anyone who hasn’t seen the Bill Murray movie of the same name, Groundhog Day is a traditionally unobserved holiday in most areas of the country, where, according to folklore, a groundhog will emerge from its burrow on February 2nd and essentially predict an early spring or a long winter. I have to admit, I had no idea who David Margulies was other than by his role in Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II as the mayor of New York City, Lenny Clotch. I never watched the Sopranos (as an Italian-American, I think mafia-based entertainment is just stupid), and I’m not a theatre goer. However, in the midst of the recent string of celebrity deaths (or semi-recent, as these dedication comics are still on Gentleman Cthulhu’s weekly posting schedule), a friend of mine posted that Margulies had died, and immediately I decided to add a comic for him as well. It seems a strange thing to be writing about a man who I never knew personally, especially because now with the advent of social media, so many personal friends and acquaintances of celebrities can take to the internet and share their thoughts and memories in honour of such a person’s passing. Still, I could not help but share a few thoughts on a man who’s on-screen presence was such that his death leaves a hole for those who appreciated his talents and work.  Read more… ›

When I originally wrote the following blog piece, and conceived the idea of bumping this week’s planned Gentleman Cthulhu for a dedication comic to Angus Scrimm there had been only one other death reported: David Bowie. Scrimm’s role as the Tall Man in the Phantasm series seemed to fit the theme of this comic better, so I went with him. But then, as I was finishing the work on today’s comic, I saw the news about Alan Rickman. More, a friend of mine (who’s Facebook post was originally how I found out about Scrimm’s death) posted that David Margulies died as well (known for his role as Mayor Lenny Clotch in Ghostbusters).

I have seriously considered creating dedication comics for all three, not to be crass, but rather because I don’t want to be remiss in honouring only one death and not the others, especially because of the iconic roles they played and films they were a part of (even Bowie, who’s better known for his music). Like most Americans, I was first introduced to Guy Fawkes and the holiday surrounding his and his fellow conspirators’ attempted bombing of Parliament through the Alan Moore graphic novel and the film based upon it of the same name, V for Vendetta. Being an anglophile, I’ve done as much reading up on the holiday as I can, though I’ve never had the opportunity to celebrate it properly or even witness, first-hand, the various observances of the day. This week’s comic is literally all I had in me after the four-day New York Comic Con. I had planned to catch up and get ahead on some Gentleman Cthulhu comics during those occasional pockets of down time we artists experience at conventions. For the sixth year in a row I will be making an appearance at the show, this time in the exact same spot as last year: Booth 1259 in the Small Press area!
